Spencer Spiering

My Passions and Personality

I am a people oriented Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in engineering fundamentals, project management, and design. As an engineer, I am fascinated by the design process and would like to pursue a career in the area of product development. For me, the most incredible part of being an engineer is using the knowledge I have gained to change the way people interact with the world around them.

A few fun facts about myself

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I enjoy photography, I’m an avid guitarist, I have a dog named Sandy, the last book I read is Barbarian Days by William Finnegan, I’m a fan of playing card games, I love the outdoors and anything that comes with it (skiing, surfing, and backpacking are my favorites), I play water polo, and my favorite pastry is a scone.

What I've Done

Technical Engineer and Project Manager

Procter & Gamble: Oxnard, CA

June 2021 to Present

My day-to-day work includes organizing teams of contractors and engineers to deliver on schedule machine improvements, writing technical documentation, and uncovering savings opportunities; so far, my projects are generating $100,000 of yearly savings. A notable project that I recently completed is an online interface that I developed to allow cross-functional teams to communicate information 75% faster; engineers across the category are now applying this to their work.

Product Supply Engineering Intern

Procter & Gamble: Multiple Locations

Summer 2019 and Summer 2020

As an intern, I took the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects. In this role, I redesigned parts using finite element analysis and generative design to increase lifespan by 400%, I published guides to aid engineers in the designing of components for additive manufacturing, and I automated machinery to prevent 100% of off-quality packages from reaching the consumer.

Engineering Intern

SPI Consulting Engineers: Lafayette, CA

Summer 2018

At SPI Consulting Engineers, I was introduced to the world of complex shoring systems and consulting work. I aided in the designing and modeling of shoring systems for jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area and monitored the progress of operations by inspecting job sites and working with senior engineers.

Data Analytics Intern

Knowi Data Analytics: Oakland, CA

Summer 2018

This role allowed me to become familiar with machine learning models and well versed in SQL programming. I analyzed client data to tailor machine learning models to fit their needs and published articles regarding machine learning and embedded analytics.

Research Intern

Morgan Stanley: Walnut Creek, CA

Summer 2017

While my primary role was identifying and evaluating Exchange Traded Funds to improve the performance of fixed income strategies, I also researched, reviewed, and implemented socially conscious investing.

Education

Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana

BS in Mechanical Engineering

Fall 2017 - Spring 2021

Universitat Politècnica de València, Valencia, Spain

What I do on the Side

Reimagined Electric Drum Brake

Spring 2021

TRP international financed a team of senior Purdue Mechanical Engineers and myself to innovate the electric drum brake. We designed, simulated, and manufactured a lever arm cam mechanism that increased brake force by 30%. My role within this team was that of mechanical designer and manufacturing lead. The design was considered for the Purdue University Malott Innovation Award.

Spring 2020

This website has been an ongoing project of mine. It started as a fun way to learn about web development and ended up as an interactive resume and new means for people to get to know me.

Prosthetic Hand Design

Spring 2020

I used Creo Parametric to model a mechanical and semi-lifelike prosthetic hand and simulate the motion of the fingers. This project helped solidify my knowledge of top-down design and surface modeling.

Hand Assembly

Purdue Orbital

Spring 2018 - Spring 2020

I collaborated with peers working to be the first student organization to launch a satellite into orbit. My contribution to the effort was researching and designing a self-stabilizing platform meant to launch a rocket from an altitude of 25 km.

Mars Rover

Fall 2019

While studying CAD design techniques and best practices, I modeled and prototyped an all-terrain rover to allow kids to interact with and explore the outdoors. The rover employed a rocker-bogie suspension system and remote control via Bluetooth connectivity.

Cord Organizer

Spring 2019

After struggling with transporting cords between classes, I prototyped a spring powered cord organizer designed to wind and store various charging cables.
